Hypnosis and Reiki: A Powerful Combination

Gaye Gibson, RN, PsyD, CCHT
Here & Tao Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a means of directly accessing the subconscious mind. Its purpose is
to create a different—and usually improved–emotional environment or mindset in an
individual, usually regarding a specific topic or issue. Methods of gaining this access
are many and varied but most involve deep relaxation, visualization and the
achievement of a meditative state of mind. Once the subconscious is available,
suggestions are offered by the hypnotized person to him/herself (self hypnosis) or may
be offered by a hypnotherapist (hetero-hypnosis). Since the relaxed mind tends to
readily accept positive suggestions, profound changes in attitude, belief systems and
behaviors can result, especially if the suggestions are well phrased, offered sincerely
and sensitively, and do not conflict with the person’s basic moral code or ethics.
Hypnotherapy can be an opportunity for people to effect profound changes in
themselves; to create the life and inner world they desire. Individuals can be assisted
to let go of modes of thinking and acting that no longer serve them and/or to take the
time to just relax and feel good.

Hypnosis alone is a very powerful healing modality, as is Reiki. Once I
combined them during sessions involving all kinds of issues, I was amazed at
the kinds of responses I saw. In order to better understand what forces are at
work in this combined approach, I refer the reader to the explanatory
paragraph above for a description of hypnosis; following is a brief discussion of
Reiki. From the two, you will likely be able to gain a sense of why this
particular combination of therapies holds so much promise in helping you to
make incredible breakthroughs in dealing with a variety of issues.

Diane Stein explains in Essential Reiki, (pg 18, The Crossing Press Inc.,
Freedom, CA), that, “Reiki energy heals the whole person. In healing a
headache, for example, Reiki may also heal other organs and levels. Though
the healer’s hands are on the person’s pain area, her head, many headaches
have their source in the digestive system. If the headache is caused by
intestinal disturbance, the energy goes to the intestines, as well as to the head
pain. These are both physical-level areas. If the headache has emotional
causes, stress for example, Reiki also heals on that level. Likewise if the source
of pain is at the mental or spiritual body levels. If the person receiving the
healing also has another dis-ease, perhaps allergies, Reiki will act there too,
whether she has mentioned it to the healer or not.”

I have found that once hypnosis has been induced, you are more open to
receive the Reiki energy and allow it to flow, unimpeded, to all aspects of your
being. I believe it does anyway, but you have a clearer sense of it doing so in
the extremely relaxed state of hypnosis. We can also call upon your own Inner
Healers or Higher Self to enhance the healing properties of Reiki in any way that
is appropriate for your situation and beliefs. This approach is also effective in
maintaining wellness and a sense of balance and stability. I trust my instincts
and yours as to whether or not you would benefit from Reiki-enhanced
hypnosis. I am here to help should you choose to experience this process. Feel
